About This Service

Permanent Makeup in Birmingham, AL

I’m Brittany Roper, and permanent makeup has been one of the most transformative services I’ve offered at The LAB Beauty Bar in Vestavia Hills. Over 5+ years and 2,000+ clients, I’ve seen firsthand how waking up with perfectly shaped, beautifully defined brows changes a woman’s entire morning — and her confidence.

Permanent makeup (PMU) is a cosmetic tattooing technique that deposits medical-grade pigment into the upper layers of skin to create the appearance of makeup that stays put through workouts, swimming, and everything in between. For brows, this means going from sparse or uneven to naturally full and defined — without a single pencil stroke in your daily routine.

If you’ve been searching for permanent makeup in Birmingham, you’ve found the right studio. I bring a meticulous eye for detail, a commitment to natural-looking results, and a calm, professional environment where you’ll feel completely at ease.

PMU Techniques Available at The LAB

Not all permanent makeup is the same. I offer four distinct techniques, and during your consultation we’ll figure out which one — or which combination — gives you the result you’re after.

Microblading

Microblading uses a fine, manual blade to make small, precise incisions in the skin and deposit pigment in hair-stroke patterns. The result looks almost indistinguishable from real brow hairs.

Best for: Natural skin tones, people with some existing brow hair, and anyone who wants the most organic, hair-by-hair look.

Nano Brows

Nano brows use a digital machine with an ultra-fine single needle to create crisp, delicate hair strokes. The machine technique gives me more precise control and produces strokes with better retention than traditional microblading — especially on oily or combination skin.

Best for: All skin types, clients who’ve had mixed retention with microblading, and anyone wanting longer-lasting hair strokes.

Starting at $450 · 2 hours

Ombré Brows

Also called powder brows, ombré brows create a soft, shaded gradient from lighter at the front to darker at the tail. Think of it as your favorite brow powder — permanently applied.

Best for: Oily skin, clients who prefer a more made-up look, and anyone with very sparse brows who wants full, defined arches.

Starting at $500 · 2 hours

Combo Brows

The best of both worlds: I use hair strokes (microblading or nano) at the front and body of the brow, then add soft shading throughout for depth and density. The result is a brow that looks textured, dimensional, and completely natural.

Best for: Clients who want maximum fullness with a realistic finish, or anyone with very sparse brows wanting the most natural-looking density.

What to Expect: Your PMU Journey

Step 1 — Consultation

Every PMU service begins with a thorough consultation. We’ll look at your natural brows, discuss your goals, review your skin type, and I’ll walk you through which technique fits your lifestyle and aesthetic best. I won’t start any procedure until you’re completely comfortable.

Step 2 — Brow Design & Mapping

Before any pigment touches your skin, I map your brows using precise measurements based on your facial structure. This is where shape is everything. I take my time here — symmetry, arch placement, and front-to-tail balance all get dialed in before we begin.

Step 3 — The Initial Session

The procedure itself takes 2 hours on average. I apply a topical numbing agent first, so most clients experience only mild pressure, not pain. We go over the design one final time, then I begin.

Step 4 — Healing

The first week your brows will appear darker than the final result — that’s completely normal. Over 4–6 weeks, the color softens and settles as your skin heals. By week 6–8, you’ll see your true result.

Step 5 — Touch-Up Appointment

A 6-8 week touch-up is included and required. This is where I perfect retention, refine shape, and add density in any areas that need it. Most clients’ best results come after this session.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Permanent Makeup?

PMU works beautifully for most people, but a few factors affect candidacy and technique choice.

Great candidates include:

  • Anyone with sparse, thin, or over-plucked brows
  • People with alopecia or hair loss affecting brows
  • Clients who want to simplify their morning makeup routine
  • Those with active lifestyles who want brows that stay put

Skin type matters:

  • Dry to normal skin tends to hold hair strokes (microblading, nano) best
  • Oily or combination skin does better with ombré or combo techniques
  • Mature skin benefits most from powder/ombré methods for longevity

Contraindications (brief):

  • Currently pregnant or nursing
  • Active skin conditions on or around the brows (eczema, psoriasis)
  • Recent Accutane use (wait 12 months)
  • Certain blood-thinning medications — discuss during consultation

When in doubt, book a consultation. I’ll assess your specific situation and give you an honest recommendation.

Why Choose The LAB for Permanent Makeup in Birmingham?

There are a handful of PMU artists in the Birmingham area, but here’s what sets my studio apart.

Experience you can trust. 5+ years of PMU work, 2,000+ clients, and hundreds of brow transformations specifically. This isn’t a service I added last year — it’s one of my core specialties.

Natural-looking results are non-negotiable. I’ve seen the results clients come to me trying to correct from other providers — overdrawn shapes, wrong undertones, harsh edges. My work prioritizes subtlety and symmetry. The goal is always that people notice how good your brows look, not that they’re tattooed.

A sterile, professional environment. My studio in Vestavia Hills is set up with single-use needles, disposable tools, and full sanitation protocols on every service. Your safety is built into every appointment.

Honest consultation first. If I think a different technique will give you a better result than what you came in asking for, I’ll tell you — kindly, clearly, and with an explanation. I’d rather take the time to get it right than rush into a procedure.

Serving Birmingham and surrounding areas. Clients come to The LAB from Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Hoover, and throughout the greater Birmingham metro.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does permanent makeup last?

Results vary by technique and skin type. Microblading typically lasts 1–2 years; nano brows, ombré, and combo brows usually last 2–3 years. Annual refresh appointments keep your brows looking their best between full sessions.

Does it hurt?

Most clients are pleasantly surprised. I apply a topical numbing cream before beginning, which significantly reduces sensation. The most common description is mild pressure or a light scratching feeling — not pain. Some areas are more sensitive than others, but the procedure is very manageable.

How much does permanent makeup cost in Birmingham?

At The LAB, permanent makeup services start at $400 for microblading and go up to $550 for combo brows. That price includes your initial session plus the required 6–8 week touch-up. Annual refresh appointments are separate and range from $150–$200. See the full PMU touch-up pricing here.

How do I choose between microblading, nano brows, and ombré?

That’s exactly what the consultation is for. In short: if you want the most natural hair-stroke look and have dry-to-normal skin, microblading or nano brows are usually the answer. If you have oily skin or prefer a fuller, more defined brow, ombré or combo is the better fit. I’ll walk you through the decision based on your specific skin, goals, and lifestyle.

What’s the difference between permanent makeup and a regular tattoo?

PMU uses different pigments designed to fade gradually over time (unlike body tattoo ink), and the needle depth is much shallower — targeting the upper dermis rather than deeper layers. This is why PMU requires periodic touch-ups while body tattoos don’t. It’s also why color stays truer and doesn’t turn blue or green as it fades.

Common questions about permanent makeup

PMU typically lasts 1-3 years depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. Annual touch-ups maintain optimal results.

I use numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Most clients report feeling only slight pressure during the procedure.

Initial healing takes 7-10 days, with complete healing in 4-6 weeks. The 6-8 week touch-up perfects the results.

Avoid water, sweat, makeup on the area, sun exposure, and picking at scabs for the first 10 days for best results.
